Hello everyone, my name is Lex. For the past 16 years I have been in veterinary medicine as a veterinary nurse near Austin, TX. While it was a rewarding career that I poured lots of love into I wanted a change in my life. I will always miss my furry, four-legged patients and the wonderful people who owned them. I am also forever grateful for the knowledge, confidence, and strength that I developed over the many years alongside the strong female leaders of my veterinary hospital.

Searching for my next chapter I turned my sights towards the mountains to get away from the Texas heat, and we landed in charming little Howard, Colorado in late 2021. After being here for less than a month I heard about the need for EMTs in the area, so I signed myself up to apply my medical knowledge. Less than a year later, I am a certified EMT with Arkansas Valley Ambulance District. Shortly afterwards I was entrusted with the role of AVAD’s Ambulance District Manager. As I continue learning as much as I can, I can’t help but realize how fortunate I am to have such selfless, intelligent, and compassionate people as my mentors in this new career. This is a fantastic organization that has a lot of heart, and have enjoyed serving this new community we are proud to now be a part of.

When I’m not working, I like to spend time at home with my partner, Emily, and our dogs, Aero (German Shepherd) and Jorah (Pyrenees). Our favorite thing to do is experiment with new recipes in the kitchen. The dogs watch from their comfy beds while we go all out with the meals we create (don’t worry, they usually get a little taste as long as it’s safe). Eventually, we hope to expand our family with more rescue dogs, some chickens and maybe even a goat or two. Colorado life is good!

I am currently working as a nurse assistant at the Soloist Health Regional Assessment Center. My role there is to assist with client comfort and safety as they come in for detox and/or mental health crisis. I’ve been there since October of 2025. Prior to that I finished my EMT certification at Colorado Mountain College in fall of 2024 and received my NREMT certification in April of 2025. I was a slow starter deciding to pursue EMT work, but here I am!

I began the process to volunteer with AVAD in March of 2026 and am slowly finding my rhythm for volunteer hours.

I work with one current volunteer and one previous volunteer, and through conversations with these colleagues (Teri Shaw and Sierra Romero), I was encouraged to move ahead with using the knowledge I gained in class and turning into skills, and I was also encouraged by the description of community within the volunteers at AVAD as well as the community served by the organization.

I am a reader, hiker, leisure bike rider. I love people and photography so I am always chatting with folks and playing with my camera, and I desperately want to learn guitar. Professionally I hope to be using my knowledge and skills that I develop as an EMT to serve any communities I find myself in, I am considering the possibility of working in an ER setting. My dream is to one day do grief work and play work (encouraging adults to find wonder and curiosity through giving permission to play).
